KazTransOil JSC Reduces Energy Consumption in Line with National Policy of the Ministry of Energy

 30.07.2025    44

In the first half of 2025, despite a 2.2% increase in freight turnover, the specific energy consumption per tonne-kilometer decreased from 4.23 to 4.16 tonnes of conventional fuel per million tonne-kilometers, or by 1.65% compared to the same period of the previous year, confirming an improvement in the company’s operational efficiency.

KazTransOil JSC continuously implements measures to improve energy efficiency. In 2024, the company reduced its total energy consumption by 2.8%, or 3,898 tonnes of conventional fuel, compared to 2023. This reduction was achieved through the optimization of operating modes of trunk oil pipelines, the use of temperature maps for the «hot» routes Uzen – Zhetybai – Aktau and Uzen – Atyrau – Samara, and the modernization of pump units at the Zhetybai oil pumping station (OPS) and the Pavlodar main oil pumping station (MOPS).

In the first half of 2025, similar pump unit replacement projects were carried out at the T. Kasymov OPS and the Kalamkas MOPS. Reduced energy consumption contributes not only to improved energy efficiency but also to the overall resilience of the oil transportation system.

The company’s approach fully aligns with the goals of the Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency Improvement Concept for 2023–2029, approved by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan on March 28, 2023. Within the framework of this strategy, KazTransOil is implementing modern technological solutions.

In particular, the company has developed and introduced a technological temperature mode map for «hot» oil pipelines, ensuring the efficient transportation of highly viscous crude blends and oil with complicated rheology (flowability) and a positive pour point. This solution allows the company to maintain the required transportation parameters while optimizing energy consumption levels.

KazTransOil JSC also regularly analyzes the efficiency (performance coefficient) of all pump units at its oil pumping stations and develops recommendations for reducing energy consumption. This includes comparing the actual performance characteristics of pumps with their technical specifications and replacing outdated equipment with more energy-efficient alternatives.

The company consistently works to reduce the energy intensity of oil transportation. For example, by optimizing the technological operating modes of the Uzen – Atyrau – Samara trunk oil pipeline, in the first half of 2025, KazTransOil reduced the specific gas consumption for oil transportation along «hot» pipelines by 0.8% compared to the first half of 2024 — from 5.23 to 5.19 thousand m³ per million tonne-kilometers.
