KazTransOil JSC has reached a historical minimum in energy intensity of oil transportation – 3.7 tons of conventional fuel per cargo turnover of one million tons of oil per kilometer. This is 2.4 times lower than in 2010. Thus, thanks to systematic work in the field of energy management, the company continues to confidently move towards sustainable development and reducing its carbon footprint.
Since 2011, KazTransOil JSC has been building a step-by-step energy efficiency model: from the creation of process mode services to the integration of the international standard ISO 50001 into key business processes. Today, energy management at KazTransOil is not just control over resource consumption, but a strategic tool for operational sustainability.
Electricity and natural gas — in focus
The main emphasis is on the rational consumption of electricity for pumping units (25% of the total volume) and natural gas used in oil heating furnaces (more than 65%), in tons of equivalent fuel (TEF). Over 14 years, the total energy savings in monetary terms amounted to 1.9 billion tenge.
Optimization of the temperature regime — the «hot» effect
One of the key projects was the optimization of the temperature regime on the strategically important section of the Atyrau-Samara oil pipeline. By replacing the Mangyshlak oil mixture with complicated rheology and positive pour point with Kashagan oil with a negative (minus) pour point, it was possible to turn off the heating furnaces during the warm season.
If in 2021 oil heating was carried out all year round, then in 2024 the heating furnaces were switched off for five months in a row, which allowed saving over 10 million m³ of natural gas. In total, gas savings since 2022 amounted to more than 25 million m³.
Saving resources - preserving the future
KazTransOil's approach is not a one-time action, but a systematic movement towards an energy-efficient future. Real figures, tangible savings and environmental impact confirm that sustainable development is not just a slogan, but a reality.
