This year it marks the tenth anniversary of the start of operation of Kenkiyak-Kumkol oil pipeline. 794.2 km long oil transportation route was built as part of Kazakhstan-China strategic pipeline project. It provides for diversification of domestic oil transportation directions.
At the first stage of Kazakhstan-China project, Atasu – Alashankou oil pipeline was built and put into operation in 2006. In 2009, Kenkiyak-Kumkol oil pipeline was launched. Its construction will connect the separate system of pipelines to Western and Eastern Kazakhstan. The pipeline runs through the territory of Aktobe, Kyzylorda, Karaganda, East Kazakhstan and Almaty regions. As a result, West Kazakhstan oil received access to domestic refineries of Shymkent and Pavlodar. But most importantly, Kazakhstan has a new oil transport corridor to China, which significantly expands the opportunities for domestic oil exports and transit of Russian raw materials.
For the further development of the oil pipeline system on the route Kazakhstan–China in 2010, KazTransOil JSC built a new Kumkol main pump station, equipped with modern microprocessor equipment for pumping oil. Today, Kumkol main pump station accepts oil from Kumkol group of fields and oil from the Western region via Kenkiyak-Kumkol oil pipeline. Similarly, in 2018, the upgraded Kenkiyak main pump station was launched.
The volume of oil transportation to domestic refineries increases annually. For ten years 52 million tons of oil are pumped through Kenkiyak-Kumkol. Of these, 24 million tons for export and 28 million tons for the domestic market. Initially, the capacity of Kenkiyak-Kumkol pipeline was 10 million tons of oil per year. After the launch of the second stage of the Kazakhstan-China oil pipeline and the implementation of the Kenkiyak–Atyrau section reverse project, the pipeline capacity will increase to 20 million tons of oil per year.
